On a photography trip to the beach, I came across several rock stacks, balancing stones, cairns (call them what You will). Humans have always stacked these stones with a more or less artistic expression. They did it for fun. As a game. To pass the time. As an expression of the fact that they were right there, on that exact day. Perhaps with a deeper meaning.
For millennia, humans have created cairns. Cairns have been used as waymarkers, boundary markers, warnings, and religious or cultural symbols. In modern times, they are still used by hikers to mark trails. But most often, they are made as a game or a creative expression.
Here on the beach in Nørre Vorupør, Denmark, it is probably mostly for fun or to pass the time.
Even so, they evoke an image for me of human scale in relation to nature. The small, fragile stack of stones against the roaring sea. A beautiful metaphor for our own existence in the wide world.
There is a little story hidden within these stacked stones, which I have tried to convey through some photographs of the cairns.
There was a lovely sun that day, with a bit of wind and some waves. I have tried to capture the light, the colors, the atmosphere, and the mood as I experienced it that day on the beach in Nørre Vorupør.
To make the stones stand out more clearly and sharply in the images, I have slightly increased the color saturation and contrast.
